Social Media Monitoring Project Part 2: The Triumphs of the NFL's Crucial Catch Campaign. But, Are They Enough?

Image
Recap: Three weeks ago, we looked at the National Football League’s social media dominance. The company has a large following on its various social media platforms and its overall peak interest in the groundswell is higher than its competitors. However, while the company is attracting more interest than its closest competitors, there is little evidence that the league is effectively interacting with its fans on social media. To go along with that, the NFL is still under scrutiny for its handling of a social justice protest by one of its former players, Colin Kaepernick back in 2016. Ultimately, the league must find a way to spread positive brand awareness and win over the Millennial and Generation Z folks that dominate the groundswell. That being said, today we will examine the NFL’s Crucial Catch campaign that promotes cancer awareness and support throughout the month of October. We will also consider some new goals for the company along with recommendations for how to reach them....

Attaining Social Maturity With the Groundswell

By now, it is safe to say that we as consumers have all embraced social media in its various forms. Whether we're browsing through Twitter or watching YouTube videos, we all accept our favorite social media platforms as part of our daily lives. Just like us, organizations around the world are striving to truly embrace social media, but this is not a simple task. According to Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff in their book, Groundswell: Winning in a World Transformed by Social Technologies , companies don't go directly from thinking about social media to embracing it. Organizations must take creative action before they can reach "social maturity." Photo: Google Play Take The Home Depot as an example. The company decided to start its own home-improvement community back in 2010. The company already successfully embraced various social applications including Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, so it was prepared to take the next step in further talking and listening to the groun...

Honda's Purpose-Driven Social Media Initiative

Image
We have all witnessed the many problems surrounding the automobile industry. Between emissions scandals and car safety issues, several automobile companies have frequently suffered damage to their reputations. However, despite all of these issues, large automobile corporations still continue to thrive on social media. These brands are able to engage their users and manage their customer relationships on their social platforms. Specifically, Honda is quite prevalent on several social platforms and has even taken part in purpose-driven initiatives to spread brand awareness.  Photo: Wate Back in 2013, Honda successfully worked to bring people together in support of saving drive-in theaters across the United States. Although drive-ins experienced a revival during the Covid-19 pandemic with the temporary closure of indoor movie theaters, the majority of the theaters across the country were at risk of closing about seven years ago. People have always loved drive-in theaters, but advances...

Energizing Your Audience With the Groundswell

Image
Imagine that you're a marketing specialist at a company and you are looking to spread brand awareness. Some organizations spend heavily on traditional television advertisements while others utilize social media to listen and speak to their consumers. All of those options have their benefits and drawbacks, along with this next strategy which I am going to tell you about in detail. . . .  Energizing This strategy is a marketer's dream! Companies can tap into the groundswell to energize their fans to start spreading the word of their products and services.  Once their consumers are energized, the job falls on them, rather than the company, to market the brand.  Charlene Li  and  Josh Bernoff  claim in their book,  Groundswell: Winning in a World Transformed by Social Technologies ,  that w hen political candidates get their supporters riled up and spreading the word,  they are successfully "energizing their base" (p. 130).   Believe it or n...

Social Media Monitoring Project Part 1: The NFL Dominates the Sports League Social Presence

Introduction: With the season of Fall upon us, our activities have shifted from being based around the warm vacation days of Summer to our various cooler weather traditions. If you're like me, you might enjoy the classic Fall hobbies of apple picking and eating cider donuts, but the season also brings along a new NFL season for fans to enjoy each week. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic forcing sports leagues to interrupt their seasons for several months, both the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the National Hockey League (NHL) were holding playoff games during the start of the traditional National Football League (NFL) season in September. Despite this, the NFL continues to assert its dominance by managing the most popular sport in the United States, American football. The NFL was founded in 1920 in Canton, Ohio . The league grew from having only five teams at its start to having thirty-two in its present-day format. Since the dawn of the internet, the NFL has been able to tak...
