If you enjoy Mexican food as much as I do, then you have probably been to Chipotle more times than you can count. Chipotle Mexican Grill is an American chain of restaurants with locations in the United States, Canada, and several European countries. The company has been able to maintain a loyal customer base despite an incident in 2016 where two separate outbreaks of E. coli were linked to food served at its restaurants. How has Chipotle been able to do this? Yes, they have good quality food that is relatively healthy compared to other fast-food chains. However, their consumer base, which is primarily composed of Millennials and Generation Z, has become particularly engaged with the company through the ways in which it markets itself in new and innovative ways on social media.

"Lighthearted." That is one word that can be used to describe Chipotle's social media marketing strategy. Being a food company, Chipotle is not exempt from receiving complaints about the quality or availability of its products. For example, the brand received a complaint via social media from a customer who was upset that their local restaurant was out of guacamole. Rather than offering an excuse, or a simple apology, Chipotle offered a humorous response:
"We apologize, we didn't mean to guac in and out of your life like that."
This lighthearted approach, while it did not solve the problem at hand, showed a friendly human element of the brand. This way of speaking makes Chipotle more relatable to its customers. The response was personalized, as it was similar to an informal response one would receive from a friend of theirs. It was also conversational, as it proved to be a direct response to a comment that makes the original commenter feel recognized as important to the company. Ultimately, Chipotle is able to engage its customers with responses like this one. The human element of its marketing strategy is just the beginning of its triumphs on social media.
Chipotle has been highly successful at engaging its customers via social media. The brand's ability to come up with several different ways in which it can speak to its customers is quite intriguing. Millennials and Gen Z are generally not fooled by traditional advertisements, so the brand has tried some different strategies that other companies should try using in the future. Chipotle's lighthearted tone in its messages and social media campaigns is keeping it relevant despite its previous struggles with E. coli and the circumstances of the pandemic. The brand has also pushed initiatives throughout 2020 emphasizing the safety of its consumers (see below). The company is coming up with new and innovative ideas to engage its target audience each year, so definitely expect to hear about a new social media campaign of theirs as we head into 2021.
Hi Jimmy! This example really reminds me of the Mini Cooper example discussed in the book. Chipotle uses the marketing tunnel to grow loyalty among its fans, and to create a sense of community by engaging with them on Instagram Live and TikTok, as well as creating a zoom hangout room as you mentioned. It is interesting to me how easily fast-food chains can connect with their audience, and I think we can really see how easily Chipotle connects with chipotle-lovers through various social media platforms. This is really interesting and definitely made me think more about how the groundswell affects fast-food chains!!
I think it's interesting how fast a fast food chain can connect with so many people, and I can see how Chipotle is using social media platforms to connect with people. The material you Shared also gave me a lot of new ideas. Maybe social media can be used to build many connections and various products. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Jimmy, I loved seeing you post about Chipotle — I was considering selecting this brand for my project because I'm truly impressed by how they've been able to recover after multiple E. coli outbreaks! I still love Chipotle, and I'm also a fan of their social media presence because it makes them seem more genuine and entertaining. I'm curious to know what the brand does to cater to its older audiences?
Jimmyyy! I really enjoyed your post for the week. Chipotle is doing a great job at engaging with the groundswell. I am still laughing thinking about the line "I didn't mean to guac in and out of your life like that" LOL. So cheeky.
Imagine that you're a marketing specialist at a company and you are looking to spread brand awareness. Some organizations spend heavily on traditional television advertisements while others utilize social media to listen and speak to their consumers. All of those options have their benefits and drawbacks, along with this next strategy which I am going to tell you about in detail. . . . Energizing This strategy is a marketer's dream! Companies can tap into the groundswell to energize their fans to start spreading the word of their products and services. Once their consumers are energized, the job falls on them, rather than the company, to market the brand. Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff claim in their book, Groundswell: Winning in a World Transformed by Social Technologies , that w hen political candidates get their supporters riled up and spreading the word, they are successfully "energizing their base" (p. 130). Believe it or n...
By now, it is safe to say that we as consumers have all embraced social media in its various forms. Whether we're browsing through Twitter or watching YouTube videos, we all accept our favorite social media platforms as part of our daily lives. Just like us, organizations around the world are striving to truly embrace social media, but this is not a simple task. According to Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff in their book, Groundswell: Winning in a World Transformed by Social Technologies , companies don't go directly from thinking about social media to embracing it. Organizations must take creative action before they can reach "social maturity." Photo: Google Play Take The Home Depot as an example. The company decided to start its own home-improvement community back in 2010. The company already successfully embraced various social applications including Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, so it was prepared to take the next step in further talking and listening to the groun...
